Our investigation into the toxicity associated with pulmonary exposure to synthetic polyethylene oxide fibroin (PEONF) and silk fibroin (SFNF) nanofibers included analysis of cellular responses. Weekly intratracheal administration of a higher dose of SFNF in female mice over four weeks resulted in a significant reduction in body weight gain when compared to the control group. In all treated groups, the overall number of cells in the lungs was higher than that in the control group, but the relative increase in neutrophil and eosinophil count was limited to female mice exposed to SFNF. Both nanofiber types led to discernible pathological changes, along with an increase in pulmonary MCP-1, CXCL1, and TGF- expression levels. The concentration of blood calcium, creatinine kinase, sodium, and chloride were markedly altered, demonstrating a dependence on both sex and material. SFNF treatment was the sole factor leading to an increase in the relative percentage of eosinophils in the mice. Beside this, both nanofiber types, after 24 hours of exposure, triggered necrotic and late apoptotic cell death in alveolar macrophages, including oxidative stress, elevated nitric oxide production, cellular membrane damage, intracellular organelle disruption, and intracellular calcium increase. Following exposure to PEONF or SFNF, multinucleated giant cells were generated in the cells. The combined findings suggest that exposure to inhaled PEONF and SFNF can lead to systemic adverse health effects, including lung tissue damage, with variations observed based on sex and material type. The inflammatory response instigated by PEONF and SFNF may, in part, be attributed to the low rate of removal of deceased (or injured) pulmonary cells and the exceptional longevity of PEONF and SFNF.

Within the framework of healthy and sustainable dietary choices, legumes are a subject of mounting interest. Limited research has explored the connection between legume intake and the consumption of various other food groups, along with the associated nutrient intake. This research analyzed the relationship between legume consumption and concomitant dietary choices, and the impact on nutrient intake in Finnish adults. The FinHealth 2017 Study, a population-based cross-sectional study, supplied the cross-sectional data for our investigation; specifically, 2250 men and 2875 women participated, each being 18 years of age. The influence of legume consumption (grouped into quartiles), dietary components, and nutrients was assessed through multivariable linear regression. The models' initial calibrations incorporated energy intake, along with subsequent adjustments for age, educational level, smoking status, leisure-time physical activity, and body mass index. A positive association between legume consumption and age, educational level, and participation in leisure-time physical activity was found. Legumes were positively linked to fruit, berry, vegetable, nut, seed, fish, and seafood intake, but inversely linked to red and processed meat, grain products, and butter/spreads consumption. Subsequently, consumption of legumes was positively associated with the intake of protein, fiber, folate, thiamine, and sodium, for both genders, but inversely related to consumption of saturated fatty acids and sucrose (in women only). Thusly, legume intake seems to correlate with a general selection of healthier food options.
